Can you recognise nested TCC?
Is PIN the precursor of prostatic carcinoma?
How many different forms of renal carcinoma are there?
Are oncocytic cells diagnostic?

The IAP meeting this year (June 2 – 4) will feature two of the leading experts in uro-oncology, who will discuss these and many other topics. William Murphy and David Grignon have done the research, written the books and lectured widely. They are both approachable, knowledgeable and entertaining speakers.

The Australasian IAP meeting can attract such distinguished speakers because it has a reputation for being a great meeting. Overseas visitors enjoy speaking in Australia because the pathologists in the audience are friendly, knowledgeable and participate actively. This year we are trying a more formal audience participation approach with Dr. Murphy.

We are also continuing the keynote lecture on Friday afternoon. This lecture is surrounded by the companion meetings which have become an integral part of the weekend.

At 5 15 pm on Friday we will have a new companion meeting that we have called the Grey-Green Club. This is for pathology trainees only, and it will feature the two overseas visitors. It is an opportunity for our future pathologists to interact directly with two of the living pathology legends, and to be stimulated by this experience.
The weekend also gives you time to catch up with old friends, to make new ones and to enjoy Sydney. I hope you can take the time to attend.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada and did his postgraduate pathology training at the MD Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Virtually all of these have been to do with Urological pathology particularly prostate pathology. He has been an invited lecturer, and has presented slide seminars and short courses more times than he would probably like to remember. Up to 1994 these lectures were in North America, but since then he has visited 9 countries outside North America.

William Mont Murphy, M.D.
Independent consultant in Urologic Pathology, Leesburg, Florida, 2005-present
Professor (1994-2005) and Emeritus Professor from 2005, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida.
He was born on October 5, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. He obtained his primary B.A. University degree from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1963. He then worked in many parts of the United States, starting with Boston where he graduated M.D., from Harvard Medical School, in 1967.
He did his Residency in Pathology at Case-Western Reserve University Hospitals Institute of Pathology, Cleveland, Ohio, 1968-71.
He then had senior pathology positions in many different institutions.
He had specialist training in Immunology and Cytopathology as well as in Anatomic Pathology. In recent years he has become interested in Telepathology. He has had a career long connection with the navy.
He made significant contributions to Organised Pathology by being an active member in the organizing teams in many Pathology Societies. The most prestigious of these were the:

In 2000 he visited Victoria and Tasmania as a guest of Melbourne Pathology and the Australian Society of Cytology.

Pathology at the Gold Coast, Queensland

In 2005, two new medical schools opened at the Gold Coast in Queensland. The first year intake in each school was about 80 students. The medical school in Griffith University is built in the grounds of the Gold Coast Hospital, a public hospital administered by the Health Department of the Queensland Government. It offers a 4 year graduate course after students have already gained a primary degree. It is subsidised by the Government.

The medical school in Bond University is an undergraduate course of an accelerated 4.6 years. Students join the first year after secondary school. Bond is a privately funded University and the medical students pay full fees.

Anatomy and Pathology are regarded as being important subjects and they are both being taught in what might be regarded as 'traditional courses.'
Active Clinical meetings in the Gold Coast Hospital – soon to be called the Gold Coast University Hospital – have been conducted for many years. During the past 10 years the medical staff numbers have steadily increased and the standard of these meetings has been rising steadily. Students coming into this teaching hospital environment will be exposed to the teaching and example of highly qualified and enthusiastic specialist staff.

The photograph shows an early morning (7am start) monthly meeting of the breast screen clinic in July 2005. It was attended by the full time and visiting staff of the Clinic, by the visiting radiologist, and by representatives of all the pathology providers at the Gold Coast – the staff pathologist from the Hospital, a pathologist from each of the three private practice groups and by the Professors of pathology from both medical schools.

The pathologists demonstrated their sections in two ways. Some were shown using a digital camera on the microscope which allowed them to demonstrate the 'real sections.' Other cases were shown using a lap top computer connected to a portable data projector to show microscopic images taken via a digital camera attached to the pathologist's diagnostic microscope. This was a wonderful example of pathologists in action. There was sincere and friendly co-operation, and they were confidently using the most modern equipment to demonstrate the pathology of the cases being discussed.

Vale Anda Leask

It is with great sadness that I record the death of Anda Leask who died from cancer in December, 2005. Anda and David attended the first meeting of the Australasian Division of the IAP. They displayed their books in the dining room of the Nurses' Quarters at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital during the lunch breaks on Saturday and Sunday. They have attended all of the meetings of the Division since that time, and have contributed significantly to them. David and Anda had a stand at both International Congresses that the Division has conducted. We will miss Anda's smiling presence, and we grieve with David.

Editor's Choice Picture Gallery

The annual meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology was held in February this year in Atlanta. It was scheduled to be held in New Orleans, but that was before cyclone Katrina destroyed New Orleans. The meeting was as good as ever. Some pathologists from Brisbane (David Godbolt Leo Francis, and Daniel James) are seen at the Dako stand.

The Banquet was held at the Baijia Dazhaimen Restaurant in central Beijing. This is a group of single storey buildings that was the private residence of a nobleman during Imperial times. The waitresses are dressed in very colourful Imperial period costumes.

Jennifer Hunt, one of our invited speakers last year gave a top quality lecture in the Head and Neck session at the USCAP meeting in Atlanta in February this year. She has just moved with her husband to the Cleveland Clinic. She ( and I ) was sorry that no-one asked her to have a game of badminton while she was in Australia.

Entrance to the Military Hospital 101 in Beijing. This is the premier hospital among the many that service the Military throughout China. One of the hospital minibuses that conveyed HK Ng and John Chan from Hong Kong (seen near the bus) and a few others to visit the Pathology Department which is headed by a General. This hospital has been designated as the one in which visitors to the Olympic Games will be treated.

A sizeable number of delegates from Australia and New Zealand attended and presented papers at the 4th Asia Pacific Meeting in Beijing in August 22-26, 2005. Here are some of them with pathologists from Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore touring the Forbidden City.
