INTRODUCTION
The Australasian Division came into existence as an unincorporated body in 1972. It held its Inaugural Meeting on 30 June, 1973 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under the presidency of Dr. Vincent J. McGovern. The
Division was incorporated in June 1984 "to conduct the operations of the International Academy of Pathology, Inc and to promote the objectives of that Academy in any part of the Commonwealth of Australia, the
Dominion of New Zealand, the independent states of Papua New Guinea and in such other countries and territories in the south west Pacific region in which there is no existing division of the International Academy of
Pathology Inc." The Division has flourished under a succession of committed Presidents, Board members and an enthusiastic, motivated and growing membership. The Division has had the honour of having two of its Past
Presidents, Dr Phillip W Allen (1995 – 1997) and Professor H Konrad Muller (2006 – 2008) serve as International Presidents. Professor Robin Cooke from the Division has been an outstanding Editor of "International
Pathology", the news bulletin of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP) for several years. The Division had the distinction of hosting the XIV International Congress of the Academy in Sydney in 1982, and also
hosted the XXV Congress in Brisbane in 2004.

ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING
Undoubtedly the focus of the Division centres around the highly popular and successful three day Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) which continues to attract in excess of
three quarters of its members as delegates annually. Fourteen Specialty Club meetings spread over one day form a vigorous component of each ASM, covering the
following disciplines: breast, skin, gastrointestinal, gynaecological, liver, lung, lymphoma, neuropathology, oral, fine needle aspiration, paediatric/perinatal, renal, soft
tissues and urology. Each of the other two days is thematic and centres around the contributions (lectures and slide seminars) of two internationally recognized experts in
their respective fields, often supplemented by expert contributions from members of our Division. Poster presentations are a key element of the meeting, allowing
pathologists, pathologists-in-training and scientists to present their research endeavours each year; these are judged and prizes are awarded for the outstanding
presentations. A Plenary Lecture was included in the programme in 2001 and the Master Classes specifically for trainees was introduced in 2006.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Australasian Division of the IAP is open to pathologists and trainee pathologists from the Division, and to members of other Divisions of the IAP.
